Learning the Face Space

Harry Wechsler

George Mason University

ABSTRACT
Among the most challenging tasks for visual form ('shape') analysis and object recognition are understanding how people process and recognize each other's face, and the development of corresponding computational models and automated face recognition systems. The enormity of the problem has involved hundreds of scientists in interdisciplinary research but the ultimate solution remains elusive. We overview the major face processing tasks and our solutions for solving them. We then discuss an integrated learning and evolutionary computation methodology for approaching the task of learning the face space.
